Caster concerns with the Cataclysm system
Add a comment (Comments: 3)

Read through Eyonix's post at Cataclysm Stat & System Changes for the context of this, if you haven't already.

Obviously there's some great stuff for casters here: No more trying to make spirit work for casters and less healer/caster gear contention.

But I think there's some significant concerns as well. This is just my first set of impressions after reading Eyonix's post.

All casters still on the same system

The biggest is that, of course, we're still all locked into identical stats as casters. Other games had INT casters versus WIS casters, like melee have AGI versus STR. We're all INT casters here.

So all the common items, including trinkets, are still in high contention by a large subset of your raid. Blizzard has so far been unwilling to adjust drop rates to reflect this, resulting in very low caster gear averages relative to their melee, tank, and holy paladin counterparts.

They also talked about making haste more valuable for melee (a good move) but nothing about crit for casters. I wonder if we'll see talent changes to make crit more attractive to casters: higher multipliers, dots critting as baseline everywhere.

I think the only caster who even approaches liking crit is fire mages, and there it's, at very best, equal to haste.

Cataclysm Stat & System Changes
Add a comment (Comments: 0)

This is copied from Eyonix's post, which is here: http://forums.worldofwarcraft.com/thread.html?topicId=23425636414&sid=1

As many of you know from panels at last year’s BlizzCon and posts here on the forums since then, Cataclysm will bring about major changes to familiar character stats such as Intellect, Armor Penetration, Defense, and others, ultimately designed to make the effects of stats more easily understandable and make gear choices more interesting. As these changes will have a significant impact on how stats work and relate to one another, today we wanted to offer you a closer look at exactly what’s in store and explain some of the rationale before Cataclysm arrives.

Kamigami Tools: DPS by spec
Add a comment (Comments: 8)

This tool was built by Seriallos, a data whore and the GM of <Kamigami>, a serious casual (3 nights / week) guild looking for more exceptional players who want a fun, relatively mature, and serious raiding environment. Go check out their recruitment information if that sounds like something interesting!

They are looking for 1-2 Mages, a Holy/Ret Pally, a DPS DK, and maybe a warlock.

Introducing Kamigami Tools

http://www.stratfu.com/kamigami/

Do you like looking at the top DPS rankings on World of Logs to figure out how you're doing? Are you a raid leader that wants to know the realistic maximum DPS/HPS for a class on any given fight? Not sure which spec you should be playing to eke out the most numbers? Wonder no more! The Kamigami WoW Tools are here to answer your questions!

This initial release focuses on comparing all the classes and specs on each individual Icecrown boss (currently 25 man normal mode). It scours the World of Logs top rankings pages every day to provide a comparitive view of what the best players are capable of under ideal circumstances.

Some of the details:

6 suggestions to increase the number of tanks
Add a comment (Comments: 5)

"There's nothing Blizzard can do to increase the number of people tanking" is a statement I often hear thrown around the official (and other forums), but I don't believe it. Yes, adding another class didn't help, and I doubt giving warlocks or rogues a tank tree would help either.

To stave off some WoW-induced boredom, I leveled a tank a few months ago and have tanked everything up through BQL and I can say, without hesitation, that I think the WoW interface is again falling down on the job when it comes to enabling good, pleasant play.

They've simplified many classes for AE tanking, but by leaving the interface in its archaic state, I think it's too hard for your average player, especially compared to a DPS's role (point, shoot.)

  • Tab-targetting still is poor
  • A smarter tabbing function that knew when mobs were in your face versus when they weren't, or did a better job of tracking where it should go next.

New data on melee crit cap
Add a comment (Comments: 3)

Landsoul, owner of the warrior DPS spreadsheet, posted some interesting data on the WoW forums.

If you want to follow the discussion to watch for potential GC responses, his original post is:

Warcraft Forums: Testing Reveals New Melee Hit Table Behavior

Testing Reveals New Melee Hit Table Behavior

The melee hit table is a complicated mechanic that dictates, with rolls, which type of attack will land on a melee hit. Its values differ between players and NPCs, between bosses and same-level mobs, between melee and special attacks, and has hidden nuances which take in-depth knowledge to understand fully and how it affects your damage. It has gone through many generations of changes and subsequent assumptions across all the expansions and players have tested and retested it's mechanics using differing combinations of hit, crit, and expertise rates to try and figure out exactly how it works on different targets.

With Heroic TOC gear and recently with the unveiling of ICC gear, it will be much easier to obtain gearsets with very high crit rate. This raises the concern of reaching the "crit cap" for melee attacks. The "crit cap" is an occurrence where other type of rolls (miss, glancing, dodge, etc) sum up to only allow a certain crit rate to occur. This is called a cap because your crit rate cannot surpass this amount.

First off, all the bosses now have their abilities attached to them -- sorry for the delay in that. The abilities are also clearer and easier to browse.

Secondly, we have a funny-as-only-YOGS-can video preview of all of Icecrown, which I heartily recommend you watch:

Dethkrik of War Machine on Turalyon has written an Affliction Warlock guide for us. The warlocks have gotten every spec with a guide faster than every other class -- including mages. The rest of us are slackers!

Finally, Spaceace, who plays Puppytoes in Titan on Skywall, brings us our first healer guide:

Took me too long to make this but it's finally done:

Good for those uncertain of how arcane should be played (hint: if you think it involves Arcane Barrage, you're doing it wrong!) or those of you with mage alts who want a fast catchup.

If you're more text-oriented, don't miss Stupiful's written arcane guide:

Finally, if you're an arcane mage who can handle some math, you'll also want to check out this guide from Tashur of <War Machine>, as he explains why fishing for MBarr procs can be very mana-expensive:
