A week later than we would’ve liked, but we played poorly last week so probably deserved our placement at US 5th instead of US 2nd. Alas.
I wish I could wax poetic about it being a great fight. It isn’t.
I wish I could go on about how clever the 1-hour mechanic was. It wasn’t.
One of the bonuses you get as a top guild is getting to spend hours on a fight like Mimiron hard mode figuring it out, before there’s all the videos. It takes you longer (although you get your kill before others), but the sheer joy that is a very hard fight without extra information is the reward.
Because Algalon was so simple, that just didn’t exist.
I hope Blizzard doesn’t do this again. While it was a nice novelty, and while it helped us, as a guild, get better at offline analysis (and probably helped other guilds get better at running back quickly from a wipe), it wasn’t really something I can say I enjoyed. I would’ve preferred a tactically-complex boss.

A-FUCKING-MEN.
And the 1 hour timer just prevents you from succeeding when someone loses power or starts lagging at any point, rather than being anything challenging. Throw a bunch of damage at a tank and a lot of raid damage and you do not get a fight nearly as fun as Mimiron EASY, let alone hard.
Pretty sure we spent more time getting our very first (easy-mode) Mimiron kill than our first Algalon kill (in hours.) Certainly, if it wasn’t that much, Mimiron wasn’t that much shorter.
Hm. This is certainly not what I would have expected from the culminating battle in Ulduar. After the fun I had in learning the Yogg fight, I had honestly expected Algalon would be more difficult and interesting, especially given its hardmode achievement requirements… but I will admit that I haven’t looked at the strats for Algalon yet. I guess I will just have to cling to Mimi/Yogg as my favorite fights in the instance; was hoping for a battle on the scale of Illidan or Kaelthas in TBC
Regardless, congratulations to Fusion on the realm first!
There’s still the hard-mode fight right? Or perhaps you’re not expecting that to be any more challenging than regular mode.
In any case, gratz on the kill
There is no separate mode for Algalon unfortunately. Or in Blizzard’s words: “there’s just hard mode, no easy mode.”
I agree. While we haven’t gotten that far in 25man, our 10man group got the yogg+1 fairly quickly,
but we’ll definitely get Algalon faster. If only we could try more in one week, we’d have him down
already. He IS pretty, though.
I liked having to do the hard modes before getting to him, but the 1 hour a week thing just seems
more like a gimmick than a good obstacle like the pre-requisites to get TO him.
I also liked your post about the 3-day transfer. There’s a guild on our server who has been planning
to transfer for a while, but because they have gotten closer to an Algalon kill than the other guilds on
our server, they’re going to try for a server first Algalong kill before they transfer, then transfer to a
server where they can get another server first kill. I guess they earned something, since they worked on
it, or whatever, but it just seems to me that if you get a server first kill, then leave the server, it’s not
really fair to the guilds who plan to stay on the server.
Meh. I guess I shouldn’t really complain, because I am having a great time in an awesome guild,
that just kind of bugs me.
