Common Sarth3D problems and their solutions

December 31st, 2008 by Kyth

Better late than never: I finished up the section on common Sartharion issues and how to solve them, based on talking with many level-one alts, many friends on IM, and reading page after page of forum posts:

The “money” section may be the last section, which explains how to read WWS to figure out what your DPS is actually doing on the fight (rather than who is cheesing the meters), but I also cover:

Mirror Image Threat Revealed

December 30th, 2008 by Kyth

Who hasn’t seen the hilarious raiding incident of a mage hitting mirror image and then having “Surprise! You’ve got aggro!” as the invisible buff wears off and a dragon goes charging for his throat?

Up until today mages have had to pre-emptively invis (not really an option during Tenebron and Shadron on Sarth3D), beg for hand of salv’s, or just generally squeeze their eyes shut, hover a hand over iceblock, and hope.

Today after a bit of begging, a friend of mine released an update to his mod:

Addon to display combo points on Malygos

December 30th, 2008 by Kyth

A friend of mine wrote this mod for mutilate rogues, but it also allows anyone to see combo points on Malygos phase 3. Don’t worry, unless you’re a rogue you won’t see anything at any time *other* than Malygos P3 (and the Aces High! daily):

I can’t recommend it enough, especially while learning.

To get to the GUI config, hit Escape, click on Interface, and click on the Addons tab.

Discerning Eye of the Beast

December 29th, 2008 by Kyth

Discerning Eye of the Beast is quite useful for mana-based classes, even at 80, even on their mains.

You can wear two (they aren’t unique-equipped), and while their lack of a clicky makes them poor for a boss, their worn effect is awesome for trash mobs, whether you’re soloing, getting drakes out of CoT:Strat, or speed-clearing Naxx:

Equip: Increases spell power by 75.
Equip: Restores 2% of your maximum mana whenever you kill a target that yields experience or honor.

A very good use of 50 5/10-man badges, particularly for classes like mages who find they are low on mana during AE pulls.

Denyin the Scion: the easy way

December 29th, 2008 by Kyth

While I’m on the topic, might as well mention the other seemingly-difficult raid achievement: Denyin the Scion

Deliver a killing blow to a Scion of Eternity while riding on a hover disk on Heroic Difficulty.

While it’s not as easy as Gonna Go When the Volcano Blows: the easy way, it’s also not as hard as it sounds. Again the key is that the achievement doesn’t depend on a key detail — in this case, it doesn’t care about whether Malygos dies or not, just that you get a killing blow.

Either while you’re working on 5-minute Malygos (and wiping in P2 anyways), or on a night dedicated to it, just repeatedly wipe in P3 while getting the achievement for all your ranged. Have everyone with the achievement (or not on a hoverboard) getting mobs to 5-10%, and then let those without the achievement finish them off.

Your entire guild will have the achievement very quickly, including the healers and tanks.

Gonna Go When the Volcano Blows: the easy way

December 29th, 2008 by Kyth

Last night we took 25 people into Sartharion. Only 10 were alive 5 seconds after engage.

Why?

We working on getting the achievements for Heroic: Glory of the Raider! (just 5-minute Malygos left.)

The trick for the Sarth achievement is that it doesn’t actually look to see if you live until the end, only that you didn’t get hit by any of the lava meteors. So simply have the people getting the achievement get naked, click off buffs, and then run gloriously into Sarth’s cleave or breath at the start.

Even with only 10 people alive, it only took us a bit over six minutes to kill Sartharion.

(update) I made a silly movie of it:

And there’s also a strats page now that has more information than this post:

AntiSlack: tracking raid consumable usage

December 28th, 2008 by Kyth

Sorry for just a string of AddOns lately, but I’ve been spending all my free time finishing up my latest addon and haven’t had a lot of free cycles for strategies or movies.

http://www.wowinterface.com/downloads/info10296-Antislack.html

Originally I made this addon for my guild. We have a rule that requires all the people in our raid to have food buffs and elixirs (or a flask) for new boss fights – people not doing so are awarded minus DKP. But checking out 25 people individually would take a long time … this is why I made this addon. It simply goes through all the members, looking for the Well Fed buff and all known battle/guardian elixirs and flasks. If they have it, it shows up in green, indicating what they have. You can also “report” those who lack these in Officer, Raid, Party, Guild, or just to yourself.

Use /bgas or /antislack to show the window. Happy hunting!

Unlike other mods of this type, the display is very easy to read. You do need to be in inspect range of everyone of course, since it’s not relying on addons to read the information.

Here’s what the output looks like: http://s.wowinterface.com/preview/pvw16713.png

DownTimer: Tracking Raid Efficiency

December 26th, 2008 by Kyth

Running efficient raids is so important to me that I wrote a whole article on it. But that’s not the topic of this entry.

The topic is an addon I wrote over a year ago to actually help track how efficient your raid is: DownTimer.

Most of the “lost time” on a raid has nothing to do with DPS, and everything to do with spending too much time out of combat on loot, moving from place to place, assigning targets, etc. (it’s all covered in the article above.)

And that’s where this addon comes in: It keeps track of your total in combat and out of combat time, and helps you see week to week how your efficiency is improving.

More information at: http://www.stratfu.com/index.php/DownTimer

If you have any problems with it, or there are key features missing, let me know.

BadgeBlocker and GreedBeacon: reduce spam on raids

Lets you block the spam from people looting things like badges and stonekeeper’s shards.
